Sigma Xi Overview
[from the national Sigma Xi website]

Sigma Xi (Xi is pronounced with a "Z" sound-"Zi"-as in "xylophone") was founded in 1886 to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. The Greek letters "sigma" and "xi" form the acronym of the Society's motto, "Spoudon Xynones," which translates as "Companions in Zealous Research."

Today, Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society whose programs and activities promote the health of the scientific enterprise and honor scientific achievement. There are nearly 60,000 Sigma Xi members in more than 100 countries around the world. Sigma Xi chapters, more than 500 in all, can be found at colleges and universities, industrial research centers and government laboratories. The Society endeavors to encourage support of original work across the spectrum of science and technology and to promote an appreciation within society at large for the role research has played in human progress.

Sigma Xi Members

Nearly 60,000 scientists and engineers are currently members of Sigma Xi, inducted on the basis of their research potential or achievement. Since its founding, Sigma Xi is pleased to count more than 200 winners of the Nobel Prize among its membership.

Induction into Sigma Xi has been a milestone in many distinguished research careers. Membership in this respected community of scientists and engineers is professionally rewarding and offers a chance to participate in ongoing programs and activities at the local and Society levels. Active, dues-paying Sigma Xi members also have access to valuable benefits.

Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation. Those who have shown potential as researchers are invited to join as associate members. Full membership is conferred upon those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievements in research. Each year the Society initiates more than 5,000 new members. The UTA chapter of Sigma Xi has over 50 members in our university faculty.

Sigma Xi Activities and Benefits

The national Sigma Xi society sponsors research grants, awards and prizes, and provides distinguished lecturers and media resources on science and technology. The UTA Sigma Xi chapter annually supports ACES, the Annual Celebration of Excellence by Students and was instrumental in the creation of this event at UTA. UTA Sigma Xi also annually honors a regional K-12 STEM teacher, and holds research talks by UTA faculty members.
