Dr. Jackie Gill

Dr. Jackie Gill began teaching secondary English and Journalism in 2001 after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Journalism at the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA). That same year, Dr. Gill was one of 25 educators chosen from across the United States to take part in a journalism institute through the University of Florida, the America Society of News Editors, and the Poynter Institute. In 2006, Dr. Gill earned a Master of Arts degree in English Writing at UTPA and, that summer, was accepted into the Rhetoric and Composition doctoral program at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Dr. Gill moved to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and taught secondary AP English and served as an English department chair by day and attended doctoral classes by night.

In 2009, Dr. Gill completed the coursework for a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition and began teaching composition and literature at a local college. However, after witnessing the gap between K-12 and higher education and after experiencing many of the issues that ail America’s public schools, Dr. Gill decided to shift focus toward looking for a way to help reform issues within the U.S. educational system. As such, in 2011, Dr. Gill began working on a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and completed this degree in 2015.

Dr. Gill has presented her research at several conferences during which she discussed federal and state issues within educational policy. Dr. Gill is a member of American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the Association for Business Communication (ABC).

Presently, Dr. Gill teaches business communications (BCOM 3360 and BCOM 5375) which is an interdisciplinary subject and merges Dr. Gill’s work in education, leadership, and technical writing. Teaching BCOM allows Dr. Gill to help better prepare future graduates for the ever-increasing demand for employees with strong writing, presentation, and communication skills.
