Texas Section MAA Calculus Bowl

Who Attends?
Everyone registered for the Texas Section MAA meeting is welcome to cheer on the teams. Show your support!

Who Participates?
Undergraduate students from each college or university that enters a team. Twenty teams will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Institutions may enter more than one team, however a second or third team from an institution will be accepted pending full accommodation of institutions that only enter one team. The teams will consist of 2 to 5 undergraduate students from a Texas university or college. There is no registration fee. A team leader or instructor should use the On-Line Registration Form to register. Please submit the online registration form no later than April 1, 2005. Due to space limitations, a maximum of only 20 teams will be accepted--so register early!

What is It?
A lively playoff game based on multiple-choice pre-calculus and calculus questions.
 

Setting and Protocol
The competition is held in Pickard Hall on the UT-Arlington campus. One question is displayed at a time via a computer projection system. Questions are multiple-choice with 5 choices. Once a new slide appears, the first team leader to respond has a few seconds to supply an answer:
 

  • If the answer is correct, the team earns 1 point, and a new question appears on the projection panel.
     
  • If the answer is incorrect, the team loses 1 point and all other teams have another opportunity to answer the same question. Questions may be attempted three times before being retired.

Team members may bring paper, pencils and calculators. However, these tools are generally of little help since the room is darkened, the questions are typically conceptual, and the pace is often quick.

Round to Round
At the competition, each team will receive a program that lists the preliminary round in which it will compete. Each team will compete in at least two Texas Section MAA Calculus Bowl rounds (one preliminary and the final round, two preliminary rounds, or two preliminary and the final round) and will have two chances to advance to the final round.
