UT-Arlington Mathematics Teacher Preparation Academy, 2009-2011

Secondary Mathematics Application

The UT-Arlington Mathematics Teacher Preparation Academy (UT-Arlington MTPA), funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, will provide two years of professional development in mathematics and mathematics education for up to 25 secondary school mathematics teachers from school districts designated by the Texas Education Agency as high-need.

Short Academy Description: The UT-Arlington MTPA is a collaborative effort between The University of Texas at Arlington and Fort Worth Independent School District to advance the expertise of teachers in mathematics content and pedagogy by providing unique and innovative programs in Mathematics.

Secondary Mathematics component:

In the secondary mathematics component of this academy, a cohort of 25 secondary mathematics teachers will earn 24 hours of graduate mathematics credits that can be applied toward the 33 hour Master of Arts in Mathematics degree for secondary teachers. Academy courses address mathematics content, problem solving, cooperative learning, assessment, and appropriate use of technology in the mathematics classroom. Participants completing the Academy will have received course fees, tuition, books, and materials for 24 credit hours plus some travel and conference expenses.

Secondary Mathematics Component Academy Courses: Fall and spring semester courses will meet one evening per week for 16 weeks on the UT-Arlington campus. The Learning Academy Seminar will meet for one hour bi-weekly (immediately before the evening course begins). The two summer courses will run four days per week for 3 weeks. One course will meet in the mornings and another in the afternoon. However, based upon cohort feedback, this may be adjusted to 5 afternoons only (or mornings only) per week over 5 weeks. Participants who wish to complete the MA in Mathematics degree will then have 3 further courses to take.

Qualified applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be a certified  secondary mathematics teacher;

  • have a minimum of five (5) two (2) years teaching experience in mathematics;

  • be recommended by their district to participate in the program (school district contributes a one-time fee of $1,000 for the candidate for FWISD and AISD—teachers from other qualifying districts may petition their district to cover the $1,000 fee or elect to pay the fee on their own);

  • commit to serving in a high-need district for a minimum of two (2) years after completing the Academy; and

  • agree to participate in all aspects of the Academy, including Learning Academy Seminars and program evaluation.

**Participants must procure acceptance into the Graduate School at UT-Arlington and the Master of Arts in Mathematics program under regular admission standards, provisional, or probationary admission.
