About MSSC

The Microbiology Summer Science Camp is a one week residential camp that will challenge the high school student’s mind to think, research and conduct experiments in microbiology. This camp is laboratory-based and will involve field work, which will require the students to actually collect samples from different sites on UT Arlington’s campus. The students will have the opportunity to explore the 5 I’s of microbiology are inoculating, incubation, isolation, inspection, and identification. The students will become familiar with writing, recording, and tracking scientific data, as well as working in teams. Students should be interested in science, inquisitive, and willing to work hard!

Scope
The campers will start Monday with a safety lecture, a campus tour, and a presentation by biology and pre-med advisors talking about biology academic and career paths. During the week, students will hear presentations, visit labs to learn about current research, and do hands-on biology experiments; students will go on field trips to UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and the Museum of Nature and Science. On Fridays each camp will hold a Showcase event for students to demonstrate what they have learned during the week. Camp evenings are spent in social activities (such as bowling and billiards and movie night) and work on presentations for the Showcase. Micro Summer Science Camp is for students who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors in 2010 and is focused on microbiology and explores the basic ways to manipulate, grow, examine, and characterize microorganisms using the 5 I’s – Inoculation, Incubation, Isolation, Inspection, and Identification.

12 Full Scholarships ($1,050) are available.
