Program of Work | Waiver & Transfer Policy | Management Homepage

Thesis Option: Following completion of coursework, the thesis student is required to enroll in and complete 6 hours of thesis credit. A thesis is a significant independent research project performed under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Management. The thesis committee will consist of at least three members, two of whom must be graduate faculty members of the Department of Management.

Non-Thesis Option: For the student who elects the non-thesis option, additional advanced level coursework is required. The advanced program will consist of 36 semester credit hours with 21 hours required, as well as 12 hours of Human Resource Management elective courses. Up to 6 hours of elective courses can be taken outside of the College of Business with the approval of the program advisor.

Coursework: At The University of Texas at Arlington, all business graduate degree students have to set up a degree plan that consists of two parts: (a) core course program and (b) advanced program, in addition to deficiency courses.

I. Deficiency Courses: A student entering the MSHRM program should have an appropriate knowledge of written and spoken English, Quantitative Analysis, Statistics, and basic Computer Skills. Students without a proper background will be required to take a number of deficiency courses (in addition to the normal graduate degree hours), as evaluated by the Graduate advisor. Graduate credit is not given for the deficiency courses.

II. Core Courses: Courses at the core level cover the common body of knowledge required for all graduate business students. The core program consists of courses in economics, marketing, accounting, and other vital business subjects. One or more of the core courses may be waived, depending upon previously completed undergraduate coursework. Consult the Graduate Studies Office or your program advisor for determining core course requirements. Core courses should be completed prior to enrolling in advanced courses. However, with the M.S. Advisor's permission, up to 9 hours (3 courses) may be taken in the advanced program while completing core courses. Core courses may be taken in any order, as long as course prerequisites have been met.

Semester Course load: While most students wish to complete their degrees as soon as possible, overloading of coursework can lead to low grades and academic probation. A total of six years is allowed to complete the program once you begin graduate work. Use this time wisely. A normal course load for a full-time student is 9-12 hours in the spring or fall semesters, and 6-9 hours in the summer semesters, depending upon expected demands at work and other personal pursuits. Part-time students should anticipate 3-6 hours in a spring or fall semester, and only 3 hours in a summer session. In their first semester, students should take a comfortable course load that permits a smooth adjustment to the rigors of graduate courses.

*Alternate courses may be approved by the program advisor when there is sufficient work and/or course experience.

Please check Course Description for specific course.
